That first night it started to rain around midnight, and kept going for a couple of hours. By morning, the skies were clearing, but beautiful, foggy clouds still clung to the peaks. It all smelled divine--fresh mountain rain on earth covered with pine needles and autumn grasses--Heaven.
This is the most interesting moss (?) that grows on practically everything. Yes, it really is neon green.
Square Top, skirted in fog in the early morning hours.
A snapshot of the forest floor. It was this colorful everywhere we looked/hiked. Loved it.
Yes, bear bags. Definite bear country...which is why I like having dogs in camp, dogs that will alert us to any intruding wildlife. Sometimes it's only a squirrel...but still.
A short walk to a great viewpoint of Square Top, where we sat on some logs and conversed, and pondered "the future of the kingdom" ;)
It was so beautiful, we decided to take the kids to the upper lake...but we couldn't stop there, as we could hear and almost see a trickling waterfall on the far side of the lake. Must investigate....
L loved the "smilin' rocks"...
And a distant view of the trickling "falls",...
Yes. This. It really is Wyoming. (Upper Green River Lake) Okay, now I really want to go back...
The trail along the east side of the upper lake was new to all of us, and was so scenic, it was hard to stop hiking...
Hard pine sap
Yep. It's us.
There's a special kind of duck here, they're called "upside-down" ducks..
And this! We found a patch of honest to goodness wild raspberries. So yummy!
Epic stance.
Looking north, from the east side of the upper lake, toward the lower lake
Uuhhhmmm... Nature's lawn chair?
A zoomed in view of the rain-soaked side of Square Top. Reminds me a bit of Yosemite...
Trail partners.
After we returned from our nature walk, the kids cozied up in their tent and played cards while the rain fell. There's nothing like the sound of rain on a tent. Unless it's rain on a tin roof. That's pretty cool, too.
Dinner prep. Under a tarp. With rumbling thunder as a constant musical background...
And then the hailstorm! Wahoo!
Ember LOVES her people. She loves hiking and camping trips because she gets to love on her people.
And the hail, beginning to build up on the sides of our tent.
The view from our campsite of the lower lake.
Our lovely spring-water source. Tasty.
Ember, watching it all with her "magical-moody" eye... ;)
The storms eased up long enough for us to take a sunset stroll to the south beach of the lower lake. The sun setting on the peaks was...intriguing, as the light was constantly changing.
And moose tracks! Lots and lots of moose tracks...
