Backpacking Green River Lakes Area....DAY 1

We spent Labor Day weekend getting rained on, hailed on--and having the time of our lives. We had O drive us to the lovely Green River Lakes area, as she is still accumulating driving hours for her license.  I'm glad I had the chance to stick my camera out the window and get some quick pics of the beautiful (and early?) fall colors!

And below, a "map" of our trails traveled on this trip. North is on the right hand side of the pic below, we traveled south from the parking lot toward the Upper Green Lake. The yellow dot is where we eventually pitched our tents.

And a different angle, the top left corner is northwest.

A view of the famous Square Top Mountain from the parking area.

We hiked around the west side of the Lower Lake, and it seemed as though we were transported to the Oregon coast...moss, ferns, springs, it was amazing.

And down below us, some kayakers looking up at us.

And here, a view of the beach we were planning on camping on. Turned out, even though we saw people camped there last summer, there are now signs that say it is a restoration area, and no camping within 200 ft of the lakes and rivers.

So after wandering around the forest/trail, Aaron found a great spot right on the edge of the forest, with a view of the Lower Lake. There was even a small spring about a 100 ft from our campsite from which we could filter water. Lovely.

After setting up camp and the kids fell asleep, Aaron and I went exploring to the Upper Lake, and got some great pics, and even a little rained on, too. :)

Ember really bonded with Aaron on this trip. She wanted to be with him always and forever. So much so, she became possessive and wouldn't allow our other dog near him. Until we put a stop to that...but it was intriguing to watch...

Why they call it Green River Lakes...

It rained on and off throughout the day, creating beautiful clouds and the smells were divine. Dried grasses, pine needles, fresh mountain rain, crisp air, mossy logs and rocks...aaah....therapeutic, for sure.

Looks like an absolutely amazing trip - so scenic, and with such awesome companions. A little slice of heaven.
