Boulder Creek/Canyon Trail

With the snows melting in the lower elevations, we have been able to reach more of the lower lakes.  This time, it was Aaron's day off and as soon as we got the kids off to school, we headed south to Boulder Lake. Because we'd never been there, we were planning on a simple reconnaissance. We ended up doing about 4 miles...because we had to see what was "just around the corner".

Below:  The road to Boulder Lake. 50 mph dirt roads. Great views of the Winds.

Why do they call it Boulder? Check these out. And yes, there is a lot of actual bouldering through/on/in these rocks.

Wyoming's own "stonehenge"

Our first glimpse of Boulder Lake, the west end. Not very impressive.

Then we turned east on the dirt road, and things started to get a bit more interesting.  Keep in mind, this is April 28th. Still winter here...

The sign at the campground and trailheads. Horse corrals and trailer parking. :)

Towards the campground, a beaver dam area...

Driving over Boulder Creek! I did NOT expect the creek to be so big!

The campground is gorgeous. Primitive, tho. Pit toilets, no water. Bring your own.

Still in the campground...it will be stunning in the summer and Fall...

The first part of our trail, heading out from Boulder Campground.

One seriously happy face, to be out in the wilderness again.  It's been a LONG winter. :)

Grouse?  I love how it blended in to it's surroundings!

We opted for the Boulder Trail, it was 5 miles shorter...*wink-wink*

Over the creek again!

View looking east, from the bridge.

Great trail conditions. Heading east into the wilderness...

Boulder Lake is behind us...

More trail, so far great for horses.

A little streamlet...

The wilderness!!

Snow on the trail, and it started to get a little rockier, but still not bad at all.

Another bridge! I love bridges.

The longer we hiked, the wilder the creek seemed to get. Eventually, it was all whitewater.

Why? Because he can.

Great water. :)

There were two smaller birds going after what looked to be a red tail...trying to drive it away from a nest most likely. I couldn't tell what the smaller birds were?

Wildflowers?!

Proof I was on this hike, too.

After hiking up the trail for a couple of miles, we called it a day and headed back--over the bridges!

Some kind of butterfly?

A view of the lake...

All in all, the trails are gorgeous, the campground is amazing, and we didn't see another soul. This trail gets two BIG thumbs up for both hiking and horses.  :)
