5:28 pm I was outside under the patio, talking with Wildman on the phone. He was still at work and wouldn't be home until after 7. In the middle of our conversation, I saw a bright flash, followed immediately by a really loud crackle-pop-BOOM-rumble. Woah! About a half-mile to a mile away! Wildman heard it too, on the phone. About 30 minutes later, as I was inside getting dinner ready, our neighbors came up the drive. I stepped out to greet them and WOAH! the mountain was on fire! They were wondering if we had any livestock up on the bench, we didn't. The kids came out and we oooooed and aahhed at the fire. The wind had blown it quickly north and west, then had changed and was blowing east, blowing the fire away from us.
6:28 pm Wildman drove up, said he saw the fire from Macey's and figured it was too close for comfort. He came home early, changed his clothes and headed up on the bench...
Above: I climbed the bench with the kids and this is what we saw when we reached the top!
Above: a grove of trees on fire. Those flames were HUGE.
Above: a chopper dropping water. It was fun watching it. The pilot was very good at dropping exactly where he wanted it.

Above: We were eventually evacuated, at about 7:30 pm. We drove to hyrum City Rodeo Grounds/park and watched from there. Below: Mt. Doom. We were allowed back home around 9:30 pm. The mountainside looked like it was covered with a thousand tiny campfires..we were waiting for the orks to come come rushing down at first light. Hairyshoefairy and NYDD came over to see if they could roast hotdogs...it was fun watching the "ork-camp" with them.

wow, what an adventure. what did you grab besides the kids and the camera? A little too close for comfort. Amazing photos. ksl.com probably wants them.
Ditto the KSL thing. How did Wildman's parents handle the adventure?
Sounds a little scary. I'm glad everything is okay.
Wildman's parentals are in yellowstone, and won't be back until tonight. They still don't know about the fire...we didn't call them. No need to add any worries....
Amazing pictures and what an adventure! Glad you all are alright . . . and kinda glad you got the pictures to share with us. Go brave you and Wildman!
NEVER a dull moment
Count on Wildman and Wilbound to run TOWARDS a burning bush/mountain/tree or whatever...
OK, did you say "above the fire". Doesn't fire move up? Can you say " natural selection?"
No worries, Bethany....all our genes are still in tact...we were below the fire....:)
Good thing you weren't reevacuated later that night, like my folks were. The winds shifted, tha path altered, the mouth of the canyon became the focus of hot fire-fighting. Sweat was lost. Swearing ensued. Mothers (e.g. mine) frantically cogitated on what to grab and run with before deciding that it could all be replaced.
Fires were put out. The new normal began.
Ps. Orks would have attacked as soon as dusk began to overtake the light.
